DIY Lettuce Garden

A couple months ago my husband made us a lettuce garden in the side yard and since then- we haven't bought lettuce once... and we eat A LOT of salads. So besides being a great investment, it's also just been really awesome to grow something that's not only so useful to use- but that I also no longer have to worry about going to waste.

Here's how he did it...

First, he went to the local garden center and purchased some lettuce that had already began to grow. (We also have lettuce that we grew from seed that are just now getting large enough- that's a cheaper option for sure- but our growing season is super short up here so I think we'll go this route from now on).

He also picked up some good compost...

And Garden Soil...

I had cleared this section a couple days earlier. Danny then dug a hole in the ground to put the culvert in the ground (we found it already cut at this length at the local Habitat for Humanity Restore for $10)

Maverick's a really good helper...

After he dug a hole large enough to fit the culvert a little more than half way in, he filled the culvert about half way with regular soil and then covered it with newspaper (to keep weeds from growing up)...

And then covered the newspaper with chicken wire (to keep our many moles from coming up through that)...

Afterwards, he filled the remaining area with the garden soil and planted each of the various types of lettuce and bok choi...

And then poured a generous layer of the compost on top...

The lettuce has grown abundantly since then. We water it frequently and trim it often...

So I can enjoy yummy salads like this...

We are definitely going to grow our own lettuce each spring and summer from now on. Although next year we've decided to add some kale to the mix.

  1. Awesome! FYI you can get good pieces of flat cardboard at Costco in the toilet paper section (they use them to go in between the stacks of TP). I use this instead of newspaper as it's just easier and a little harder for the weeds to get through. It's so wonderful to have fresh lettuce! Great job!
